Cubs Holiday Party (Dec 21st)

Just a reminder that we will be celebrating the festive season this Wednesday at St. Basil’s Cultural Centre (10819 71 Ave. the same place we had our Halloween party). We understand that this week is a busy one for school holiday concerts, and will certainly understand if you cannot make it. For those who can come, we have planned a fun evening of crafts, treats, seasonal-themed games and holiday singing. Parents, feel free to join us for a holiday singalong at about 7:40 p.m. as we close out the year in style.

We are back at the School on January 11, 2017 at 6:30 PM.  Please have a fun and happy holidays and we look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Cub Pen Pals

We have received an inquiry from a Cub leader in Raleigh, North Carolina who has a group of Cubs hoping to connect with Cubs from other countries. They are open to a variety of methods of communication, including e-mail, regular mail (the traditional “pen pal” approach) or even Skype. If your Cub would be interested in learning about the similarities and differences between Cubs here and in the US, please let us know and we will help get them in touch with some American counterparts.

Personal Achievement Badges

In addition to the pack work on Outdoor Skills badges, the new Cub program includes a number of Personal Achievement badges that Cubs can choose to pursue on their own or in small groups. In keeping with the youth-led emphasis of the new program, Cubs can choose their own areas of interest and then select or design, (in consultation with other Cubs and leaders), four requirements in that area to earn the badge. (Leaders will likely play a larger role at the start of this new process.) The personal achievement badges are deliberately designed to be quite broad in scope, to enable Cubs to select their own interests within these general areas. The badges are:

Earth
Air
Water
Space
Summer Fitness
Winter Fitness
Year-round Fitness
Home
Community
Canada
World
Technology
Arts
Building
Hobby
Science

More detailed information on the various badge areas can be found at http://www.scouts.ca/canadianpath/download/pab/cs-pab-guide.pdf. We encourage you to talk with your son/daughter over the next few weeks to identify badge areas that he/she may be interested in pursuing. We will also be talking about this in our lairs (small groups).

Aquatic Skills Badge

As part of our swim night at Commonwealth pool a few weeks ago, some Cubs worked with the leaders to complete a number of requirements towards levels 1, 2 and 3 of the Aquatic Skills badges. Some swam 25 m under a lifeguard’s supervision, others showed they can swim with their head in the water, or knew how to use a snorkel. We will be working with interested Cubs over the next few months to complete more of the Aquatic Skills requirements, but we want parents to know that for some of these, such as “I have snorkeled in a pool or open water (such as a lake)”, we are quite willing to accept your “testimonials” that your kids have done these things under your supervision. Also, if your Cub has achieved a level of certification through Red Cross, YMCA or Aquaquest swim lessons, please bring in their “report card” from the course and we will give them appropriate credit.

You can find a complete list of the Aquatic Skills competencies at http://www.scoutinglife.ca/wp-content/uploads/oas/aquatic-skills-en.pdf.
