Cub Swim

Cubs will be going to the Scona Pool (10450 - 72 Avenue) to earn their swim badge, splash, dive and have lots of fun this week before we break for the holidays.  We will be meeting at the pool at 6:30 PM.

Holiday Party

We are almost done the first half of our Cub Scouting year. Before we break for the holidays we will be having our annual party and breaking of the pinata. We will be meeting at the Parkallen Elementary School Gym on December 7th starting at 6:30 PM.

Road Signs & Crests

This week our Cubs will be finishing their Sixes Crest and learning how to read road signs as part of their road safety skill set.  We will be meeting at the Parkallen Elementary School at 6:30 PM.  Please bring your Cub Books.

Nov 23rd - Cuboggan Night

Cubs will be tobogganing this week at the Mill Woods Park (66 Street and 24 Avenue - across from the Mill Woods Town Centre Mall).  Please dress for the weather, bring a helmet and your favorite toboggan.

Sixes and Crests

Last meeting Akela had put the Cubs into Sixes.  A Six is a small team of Cubs, made up of six youth that is a subgroup of the Pack.  A Six is lead by a Sixer and assisted by a Seconder that help the Akela during activities and meetings.  This week our Cubs will continue building their Sixes and make crests.  

Getting Ready for Remembrance Day

This week our Cubs will be getting ready for the Remembrance Day Parade at the University of Alberta Butterdome.  We will be meeting at the Parkallen Elementary School at our regular time of 6:30 PM.

There is no Cub meeting this week.  We will be back at the Parkallen School next week on November 9th.

Cub Investiture Night

Our next meeting on October 19th will be our Investiture Night where we will be investing new members to our Cub Pack.  Please wear full dress uniform and parents may want to bring a camera.  

Getting Ready for our Fall Bottle Drive

Cubs will be out in the Parkallen Community delivering flyers for our upcoming Bottle Drive/Edmonton Food Bank Drive.  Please dress for the weather.  We will be meeting at the Parkallen Elementary School at 6:30 PM.

The Artistic Cub

This week Cubs will be learning how to tear paper, stick their hands in goo, sculpt and by some miracle  not get any of it in their hair or on their clothes.

As part of the the Tawny Star requirement for creative expression the Cubs will be sculpting Pinatas.   We will continue our investiture preparation and have some fun.

Next week we will be delivering flyers in the Parkallen neighbourhood in for our Bottle Drive/Edmonton Food Bank Drive.

Return of the Corn Maze

The Cubs will be taking on a challenge from the Scouts on who has better skills at navigating.  Best place to do this challenge is to enter the Corn Maze.  I know the Cubs are up to the challenge and we will do their best.  Please dress for the weather and bring a flashlight.

Return of the Pack

It was great to meet with everyone last week.  Our Pack Leaders are ready for another action packed year and it begins this week as we learn the Cub Motto, Promise and Law.  Also, this year our pack will be working towards our Red and Tawny stars.

First Cub Meeting for 2011/2012

Pack! Pack! Pack!

Get ready for another fun wolf cub year. It is great to see so many cubs and new cubs this year. We will be having our first meeting on September 14th at the Parkallen School Gym starting at 6:30 PM.

I will be announcing which stars we will be working on this year but I would like you all to think of some activities you would like to do this year as well.

Swim Up April 27th

This meeting is the official last meeting for the Beavers and Cubs for the 2010-2011 Scout year. We will be meeting at Emily Murphy Park (11904 Emily Murphy Park Road NW) at the sheltered Picnic Site (on your left when you enter the park). We will be holding our Swim Up Ceremony and Volunteer Appreciation that evening. There will be plenty of food and fun for the whole family. The fun starts at 6:30 PM.

Second Last Meeting for the Year

Hard to believe that there are only two meetings remaining for this Scouting Year. Our last meeting at the Parkallen School Gym will be this April 20th. We will be having a games night and testing for any extra badges this week. Next week is our Swim Up Ceremony where our 3rd year beavers and cubs will be moving up to the next level of our program.

Investiture and a chat with a Canadian Veteran

A big thank you to all the parents and cubs who came out to the Bottle Drive & Edmonton Food Bank Drive. This week we are investing our new members into our Pack. We also have a special guest from the Canadian Armed Forces to provide a demonstration about Canada's Military and its role in our modern world. See you on Wednesday.

Spring Bottle Drive Flyer Drop Off April 6th

Cubs will be meeting at the Parkallen Elementary School this week. Our goal is to drop off as many bottle drive & food bank flyers in the Parkallen Community as possible. Please dress for the weather.

Spring Break for Cubs

There is no meeting this week due to spring break. Enjoy what is left of the snow and we will see you all next week on April 6th.

Sea Critters Night March 23rd

Cubs, this week is Sea Critters Night. The lab on campus is room Z 211, this is on the second floor (main ground level) of the Biological Sciences Building (11 B4 on Map Below). Access is from the loading dock passage door on the West end of the building which enters into the Genetics wing (G), proceed east into the main elevator stair well area, if you continue east you end up in Centre Wing (CW), do not go there! From the stair well go north into the Zoology Wing (Z) and the lab is a few doors down. If you go too far you end up in the Psychology wing.

Re Parking, There is no long term legal parking by the loading dock, There are 15 minute meters and the University tickets a lot. Pay parking is available in Windsor car park, or the Faculty Club parking lot, or more expensive metered street parking on Saskatchewan Drive. The loading dock drive is off Saskatchewan Drive between the Bio Science building and the Faculty Club (Northeast corner of the University Campus).

Cub Car Race March 16th

70th Goldbar Scouting Group has invited us over on March 16th for a Cub Car Race. We will be meeting at an earlier time of 6:00PM at Fulton Place Hall (6115 Fulton Road NW). This is an informal meeting but we will need to be in full uniform, if you do not have your uniform please wear a green shirt. You will need to bring your Cub Cars that you had made to this meeting, if you do not have one please let me know and I will bring some extras.

Cub Swim on March 9th

Hey there Cubs!

This Wednesday we will be going swimming at Scona Pool (10450 72 Avenue, shares a common entrance with Strathcona High School). We will meet at the pool entrance (inside Scona High School and downstairs) at 6:30pm. Parents are welcome to join us at a cost of $5.50.

Winter Camp 2011

This week the Cubs will be meeting at the Parkallen School to finish our winter camp preparations. Just a reminder please dress for the weather this Wednesday's meeting as we will be outside. Happy Hunting Cubs.

It was great to see so many Cubs out on Saturday for the Cub Car Build. I now have to spend many sleepless nights working on my car just to compete with these cars. This week we will be meeting at the School to work on Winter Cubing Badge.

Be prepared to talk about the following:

1. Describe how to prevent and treat:
a. Frost-bite;
b. Skin on cold metal;
c. Snow blindness;
d. breaking through ice;
e. Hypothermia
2. Show that you are properly dressed for a winter outing or describe how to dress for with weather. Know the importance of staying dry
3. Recognize and identify in winter conditions 3 common birds and 3 common trees or shrubs
4. Point out the North Star and 3 night sky features, such as stars, constellations, and planets
5. Take part in two of the following
a. A winter camp
b. A winter hike
c. 2 winter outdoor meetings
d. lighting a fire and cooking a simple meal under winter conditions
e. a hike on snowshoes or skis
f. an ice fishing trip

Let the Building Begin

Winter Camp is coming up at the end of the month and we all know what that time is again. It is time for the annual 24th Parkallen Cub Car Classic. In order to get ready we will be handing out the racers this week for the cubs to work on. We will be awarding for best design and fastest car and picking grand champion.

Now that it is warm it is time to have some winter outdoors. The Cubs will be meeting at the Jackie Parker Park (4540 50 Street) for some fun skating on Jan 26th starting at 6:30 PM.

No Outdoor Hike Week

Cubs,

I was thinking for this week's meeting we should go for a long hike through deep snow at very low temperatures with no chance of hot chocolate. Unfortunately, I spent the weekend shoveling and pushing cars out of snow banks and I am now looking forward to a warm indoor meeting.

We will continue with our Purple Star requirements as well as do some badge testing. If there is any badge that you want to test for please let me know.

First Meeting of 2011

Welcome back Cubs. I hope everyone has had a great holiday break and is ready for fun in the Jungle. We will be meeting at the Parkallen School Gym at 6:30 PM this January 5th.

The month of January is "Bring a Friend Month". If you know of any of your friends that might be interested in Beavers please bring them out and earn a badge.
